What is BB Cream?

In the beginning

BB cream was created by German dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek back in the 1960’s. Christine formulated the cream with the sole reason to protect her patients’ skin after surgery and different facial procedures.

If you’re wondering what BB is short for, it’s beauty balm or blemish balm.

Fast forward to the 1980’s, Korean cosmetic companies had altered and developed the cream further. It then spread through Asian like wildfire, but was not until 2011 – 2012 BB cream cracked the Western market.

What is BB cream?

An enormous variety of BB creams now exist in today’s market, with huge range of shades to choose from. The majority of cosmetic brands have their own cream and have added SPF for sun protection.

What BB cream does:

  • Moisturises
  • Acts as a Sheer coverage foundation
  • Acts as sun protection (optional)
  • Is a skin treatment

It was Developed to be very versatile, while also creating efficiency in a beauty regimen. It is a sheer – light coverage foundation, and is lightweight to wear compared to a standard foundation.

BB cream skin care advantages:

  • Anti-wrinkle
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-ageing
  • Circulation

These advantages may vary from product to product, it mostly depends on the brand and type of BB cream used. Some creams will offer higher amounts of anti-oxidants and Vitamins, whereas some will offer less. It always pays to research before buying a product.

The cons

Don’t get me wrong, BB cream is an amazing product that I use all the time. But there is a downside.

The down side to BB cream is similar to the infamous 2 in 1 shampoo-conditioner. It just doesn’t work as well as using shampoo by itself, and then conditioner by itself.

On the contrary to this negative, BB cream is a whole lot cheaper than my foundation, sunscreen, moisturiser, and skin treatments put together.

BB creams are lighter than standard foundation, but heavier than a tinted moisturiser. This is something to consider if you’re thinking about changing over. Try to grab a free sample of BB cream to try out first.

When to use

BB cream is a handy alternative to a full face of makeup. It has a more natural look as well as being lightweight to wear. Some use the cream everyday because of its efficiency and straightforward application, while still covering blemishes.

I personally use the cream at work, and to anything casual such as coffee, shopping, etc. It’s quick and simple. I can apply it with my hands, and I don’t have to put any powders on my face.
