If you’re unsure of what cellulite is and how to get rid of it, chances are that your day to day lifestyle could be making it worse.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a localised skin condition that causes the skin to have a dimpled appearance, often referred to as an”orange peel” texture. It’s not a disease, simply a very common skin condition, typically among women.
Unfortunately there’s no single answer to the question “what causes cellulite?” but the possible causes include:
- Hormonal Changes
- Weight gain
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Poor diet
The reason cellulite has such a large name is because of it’s commonness and appearance. A staggering 80 – 90% of all women develop cellulite at some point in their life after puberty, some experience it worse than others and unfortunately it can’t always be prevented.
How you could be making your cellulite worse
1. Being a couch potato
You’ve probably heard this term before. Sitting on the couch, at your desk, or just a lack of regular physical activity could be the culprit here. If you’re not regularly exercising and moving around you could be adding extra weight to your body, and this can make cellulite stand out even more!
A simple 30 minute walk around the block each day could be your saviour here, but it varies for every person.
2. Eating too many potatoes
I’m not just going on about potatoes… but there is a kind of potato theme developing. It means that your diet includes too many simple carbohydrates that could be adding to your waist line.
Extra weight = more noticeable cellulite.
Potatoes, bread, pasta and desserts are all big temptations but too many of these foods could be making your cellulite worse.
3. Not hydrating your body
Funny thing about water is it makes up more than 60% of our bodies, and you need to keep your water intake high! How much water you should drink varies from person to person but is roughly around 2.7 litres for the average women, which includes water intake from food and drink.
When your body is dehydrated you’ll most likely notice you skin going dry, and this can cause your cellulite to stick out like a sore thumb.

4. Poor quality diet
A poor quality diet can have a negative impact in your mission to combat cellulite. Here are a few of foods that should be limited:
- Added sugars
- Added salt
- Unhealthy fats
- Simple carbohydrates
- Dairy (cheese especially)
Looking back at this list you’ll probably notice most of these foods can be unhealthy.
How to combat cellulite
Before getting started, know that you can’t get rid of cellulite, only reduce its appearance, unfortunately.
1. Regular exercise
Regular exercise is one of the best ways to reduce cellulite naturally. The reason it is such a great method is because of the multiple other health benefits that come from it as well.
By exercising on a regular basis you can lower your total body fat percentage and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Try get in 30 – 60 minutes every day if you can.
If you’re not a big runner or walker, try weight training exercises. Don’t worry, you wont transform into the hulk or anything like that. Weight lifting exercises will help you to burn fat, and build and tone your muscles to reduce cellulite.
2. Healthy diet
A healthy diet is number two on the list of ways to prevent or minimise the appearance of cellulite. A good diet leads to and helps to maintain a healthy body weight, which helps to lessen the severity of that “orange peel” texture.
If you’re a cigarette smoker this could be your reason to give it up. Smoking may actually make your cellulite worse and increase it’s visibility.
3. Hydrating your body
A key to keeping your skin looking fresh and wonderful is to stay hydrated. This means consuming roughly 2.7 litres of water for the average women, which includes water intake from food and drinks.
The skin is the largest organ in the body and needs to be hydrated constantly to run smoothly. On the same line of “smoothly”, keeping your water levels up will help to reduce your cellulite as well as giving your skin a nice natural glow.
4. Medical treatment
There are some medical treatments that are available for reducing cellulite but the majority are not permanent. There are different creams and medical procedures that can help, but none of them will last.
This is also a costly route to go down depending on your situation. It could be beneficial to try the more natural approach before digging into your budget just yet.
